The one-eyed kitty cat and the rooster, by Yara Zalzal

The barn right before me,

I went to check up on her.

The smell of hay,

Barely blocking the way,

Barley on the ground and there lay

My one-eyed, sneaky little kitty cat,

All covered with hay,

My little orange kitty cat,

Left eye injured but seldom cared,

Her fate decided by the belligerent rooster

and the haughty German Shepherd,

Broke my heart in July

and brought light into my life in May

Fast-forward to today,

The barn is empty,

Only a soul running wild and free,

I sensed,

I felt shattered, my heart broken into pieces

The one-eyed kitty cat no longer there,

Only a soul crossing the rainbow bridge,

Running wild and free

The rooster who is believed

To have left the little ball of fur,

Blind in one eye, defending his ladies,

There lay dead, fate catching up to him,

While also vowing eternal protection to his ladies

Him chasing after me,

Staying true to the same vow, I remember him.

Coyote, victim of an empty stomach,

Had him for lunch, was he really to blame?

My memory takes me back to

The one-eyed kitty cat,

The defenseless little creature,

There lay dead, only flesh and bones,

Body no longer catching its breath,

All stiff and bloodied, but at peace,

The German shepherd stole her life.

Oh what a life she would have led,

In a world where survival of the fittest

Is the rule of the game?

Now, all matters settled,

I sat there, in that very barn,

That cursed barn,

That vicious barn,

Weeping, tears running faster

Than the flow of water in a river,

Weeping my heart out,

For the rooster and

The one-eyed kitty cat,

Were no longer there.

Cycle of life my ass,

What have you done?

Why is this how

The world functions?

Cycle of life go to hell.
